Bangkok, 2002
The Bangkok congress took place at the beginning of the 21st century and focused on the major challenges facing soil science in a rapidly changing world. With the theme “Confronting new realities,” the community addressed issues such as population growth, food security, and land degradation, particularly in tropical and developing regions. Discussions emphasized the need for sustainable intensification of agriculture and improved soil fertility management, as well as the impacts of global environmental change. Capacity building and knowledge transfer were key priorities, reflecting disparities in resources and expertise across countries. The congress also encouraged greater international collaboration and the integration of traditional knowledge with modern scientific approaches. In conclusion, the soil science community recognized the urgency of adapting management practices to global pressures and called for coordinated global strategies to protect soil resources.
