Chile, 2008
The Chile meeting in 2008 exposed participants to a wide range of soils along strong climatic gradients, from arid to humid environments, as well as soils influenced by volcanic activity. These excursions provided valuable case studies for testing the flexibility of the WRB system under contrasting conditions. The community focused on refining classification criteria for volcanic soils, salinity-affected soils, and soils with unique horizon development. Discussions often revolved around how to balance detailed scientific accuracy with practical usability in the field. There was also growing interest in linking soil classification with land use and environmental management. Participants worked collaboratively to evaluate diagnostic horizons and improve consistency in their application. The meeting contributed to ongoing efforts to update WRB and demonstrated the importance of field-based comparison in diverse global settings.
