March 1, 2001

The 2001 meeting in Hungary took place during a period of active development and consolidation of the WRB system. Excursions across Central European landscapes allowed participants to examine a variety of soils shaped by long-term agricultural use, loess deposits, and temperate climate conditions. The community focused on testing and refining WRB concepts, particularly diagnostic horizons and classification structure. There was significant attention to ensuring that the system could be applied consistently across different regions and by different users. Discussions also addressed the relationship between WRB and national classification systems, aiming to improve compatibility and communication. The meeting emphasized the importance of field-based validation and collaborative discussion in developing a robust classification system. In conclusion, it contributed to strengthening WRB as an emerging global standard and set the stage for further refinement in subsequent meetings.
