Jeju, 2014

congress
Published

March 1, 2014

The Jeju congress presented a more holistic and philosophical perspective on soil science, celebrating soils as fundamental to life and planetary systems. Under the theme “Soils embrace life and the universe,” the community explored soil biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and the deep interconnections between soil, life, and environmental processes. Alongside scientific sessions, the congress placed strong emphasis on outreach and education, incorporating activities such as soil judging contests and artistic engagement to raise awareness. Key scientific discussions focused on soil degradation, erosion control, and sustainable land management, while advances in global soil classification systems were also highlighted. The community emphasized the need to better communicate the importance of soils to the public and policymakers. The resulting outlook framed soils not just as a resource, but as a living system essential to ecological balance, leading to calls for greater protection, education, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
