Mexico, 2022

The 2022 meeting in Mexico highlighted the importance of soil classification in highly diverse landscapes shaped by complex geology and climate gradients. Excursions exposed participants to a wide range of soils, including volcanic, arid, and tropical systems, allowing detailed comparison of classification approaches under the WRB framework. A key focus of the community was improving the description and classification of soils with strong human influence and those affected by land degradation. Discussions addressed diagnostic criteria, particularly for soils with variable moisture regimes and salinity issues. The meeting also emphasized the role of soil classification in supporting sustainable land management in Latin America. Participants worked on refining definitions and improving consistency in field identification, while also considering how classification systems can better communicate soil information to non-specialists. The overall outcome was a strengthened commitment to making WRB more accessible, applicable, and relevant for both scientific and practical use.
